Dr. Christina Spinelli
PhD in Counselling Psychology, Registered Psychologist
Dr. Christina Spinelli has been a Registered Psychologist since 2023. She has provided psychological counselling for 10 years; working most often with emerging adults on relational challenges, intergenerational conflict, existential issues, and self-compassion. In addition, she has sought training in sex and couples therapy, mindfulness, as well as queer and kink affirming care.
She views therapy as a collaboration guided by humility, honesty, and humour. It is a space of authenticity and connection; where curiousity and creativity can thrive, where the chaos of life can be felt, and where the courage to display one’s humanity is honoured.
Christina is a Chinese-Italian-Canadian who has called three provinces home! The blend of cultures has taught her to deeply value family, history, community, and (above all else) delicious food.
Outside of work, she enjoys Lego, mystery novels, British panel shows, and theatre!
About my practice
Therapeutic Lens
My approach to therapy is integrative, blending a psychodynamic orientation to patterns and internal conflicts, an existential exploration of the “here-and-now”, and a practice of mindfulness and compassion. I practice with sensitivity to the cultural, historical, social, and spiritual factors that shape client’s perspectives. Forever a student, I continue to expand my knowledge base with ventures into solution-focused and narrative therapy as well as internal family systems.
Trauma Informed
My practice recognizes how trauma is prevalent, ranges in severity, and has significant impacts on how
people feel, think, relate, and cope. Supporting clients in processing their experiences begins with a transparent, consensual process that emphasizes their strengths and strategies for grounding. There is
collaboration on how we explore. Client boundaries are respected. And I hope to empower clients in
their decision making and in inviting self-compassion.
Practitioner-Scientist
My doctoral studies integrated both research and clinical practice; recognizing their reciprocal
relationship and how they must inform one another. In addition to reviewing theories and new literature, feedback is a way I collect “data” on how our work is progressing. Both formal and informal methods can be used to explore what is working, to identify what needs adjustment, and to introspect on how I can improve my practice overall.
